If you are an anime watcher (and also non-anime watcher) there is a probability you have come across the term yaoi.

What pops into your mind when you hear "yaoi"? Probably heard or seen girls posting and gushing about the arts of two male anime characters performing sexual acts on each other. These girls who enjoy contents like that are known as "fujoshans" or "fujoshi lovers".

Yaoi can be fun and sexual but then it becomes irritating when teenage girls start to sexualize yaoi characters and make it a personality.

What is the psychology behind teenage girls and yaoi?

We talk about how female characters are hyper sexualized in anime but we forget male characters are sexualized in anime, mangas and manhwas. Additional point if it's a yaoi manga/manhwa. Note that yaoi mangas are there for the sake of portraying gay characters but people honestly tend to take it too far.

On Reddit, someone asked what the obsession was with yaoi characters and teenage girls and another person likened it to men watching lesbian porn and fetishizing it. They're not wrong though.

Susan Napier who is a professor of Asian studies in the University of Texas says yaoi is a way for teenage girls to explore their sexuality without it being intimately connected to them.

They can choose the character they identify with without having to be forced in one role since there are no female characters in yaoi. This is quite understandable because in most heterosexual sex scenes, the women always take on the role of a submissive. So girls reading or watching those scenes will feel the need to be pushed into that role. But watching two men try out different sex scenes will make you pick a role without needing to be intimately connected with the characters.

This is a great explanation but what of the girls who obsess over yaoi? When we're talking about obsession, the ones who go as far as fetishizing gay men in real life and are just plain annoying.

This can be due to hyper fixation on said characters and it is a bad move. As someone who has tattoos of yaoi characters on her (I am not obsessed with them though), I understand how obsessive yaoi can get.
